Chapter Three: Rendezvous
Elijah had come to one conclusion after reasoning with himself the night before. He believed he was young enough to have a completely lust based relationship but yet he knew his soul was old enough to know when it was over and when his heart simply wanted something…more.
‘Stupid, fucking cumbersome luggage…’ Elijah’s mind was stuck on the one thought as he continued to slide his fingers over the worn silver lid of his lighter. The nervous compulsion had begun just after he had started smoking; that is to say it started when he wasn’t allowed to smoke, and not knowing exactly what to do with his hands. Flicking the lid open with the soft pad of his thumb he swiftly spun the small wheel. Sparks flew, jumping from the flint and igniting the blackened wick. As soon as the flame had burst to life, the newborn fire was extinguished with a flick of his wrists and the quick clamp of the silver lid. He repeated this idiosyncrasy until the ‘ding’ of the elevator told him that he’d reached the ninth floor.
Padding down the carpeted hall Elijah found himself standing before the harsh white door. He slowly pocketed the tarnished lighter into the back pocket of his faded blue jeans’. Inhaling a deep breath he raised his fist to knock. He paused for a moment to cock his wrist and look at his watch. ‘12:23, should be awake by now.’ The thought ran through his mind as his fist fell onto the wood, clunking against his knuckles. Knocking several times before movement could be heard throughout the apartment Elijah let a sigh slip from his lips. The door opened and Dom stood in its frame in a sleepy haze, clad in his black boxers and a white tank top.
“Lijah?” Dom asked, eyebrows knitting together as he tried to blink sleep away from his eyes. An alabaster hand quickly shoved against Dom’s tank top as Elijah pushed Dom back into the apartment.
“I just want my luggage, Dom…I…I sorta left it here, yesterday…” The last string of nonsensical words was mumbled under his breath as he began to look around for his luggage. Elijah was too tired for any confrontation; he’d been through this one too many times with Dom to feel anger or even sorrow anymore. He just wanted to finally end this phase of his relationship with Dom. Finding his bags where he had left them on the hardwood paneled floor Elijah picked them up swiftly and turned to leave.
“I…Jesus, Elijah, wait. I…” Dom’s voice broke as he reached out to stop him. Elijah froze when Dominic’s hand pulled gently against his shirt sleeve. He just wanted Elijah to know one thing: this rejection was not one shallowly induced by lust but instead by a something to enticing to pass up for the “just for fun” relationship he had with Elijah. “I…love him, Elijah…I’m sorry…”
‘“She never loved me, Patrick…” His voice broke, not daring to say her name for fear of what it might do to him spoken aloud.’ Elijah felt his jaw slacken as his mind shifted to the image of Sean’s passage beneath his fingers as he read on the plane. He quickly rounded on Dom as a torrent to passion surged through his veins.
“No, no don’t, Dom…” The emotion was bubbling up his throat, contorting his lips and tongue to speak its biding. “Don’t ever be sorry for what you feel.” He paused knowing his inner sap was beginning to bleed through, but not really giving a damn. “Especially love.” The words, more or less so Sean’s words, passed slowly between his lips in nothing more than a whisper.
A moment of silence passed as sheets rustling echoed through the apartment. Between the two an unspoken understanding was reached as Elijah finally met Dom’s eyes since finding him with Billy. He could not deny the emotion that filtered throughout Dom’s gaze, a pure unadulterated love he’d never seen before in those eyes. It was practically radiating from his body in a warm glow. In spite of himself he felt a smile grace his lips, knowing his friend had found something that meant so much to him. ‘Perhaps we can go back to how it was before.’
“Maybe I could call you sometime, you know to play some billiards. Just as friends again, like old times?” Dom offered, letting his hand fall from Elijah’s sleeve as the edges of his lips were pulled up in what could have been construed as a grin.
“That’d be nice, Dom.” With that and a small hug between friends Elijah left, with a smile that ventured to mingle in his bright blue eyes.
As Elijah stepped back into the elevator of Dom’s apartment building a subtle vibrating started to buzz against his hip. The vibrating stopped abruptly and he flinched as his cell phone began ringing. He reached down, recognizing his agent’s number, and quickly flipped the phone open.
“What’d ya find out?” Elijah asked, pressing the burned lobby button.
“Well it seems Mr. Astin is open for the rest of the day. He said that you could stop by anytime.” A sudden rush hit Elijah square in the chest.
‘Anytime.’
+++++++++++++++
Sean placed the phone back into the plastic cradle. The voice on the other end had told him his client was wondering if he could stop by to discuss Sean’s book and the future prospects of turning it into a film. So of course he told the man he was completely free the whole day to talk to the actor. He sat on the edge of the meticulously made bed realizing that all his dreams and aspirations might now lie in the hands of this Elijah Wood.
“Sean…” The door opened and Christine’s from stood in the doorway as she spoke to him, waving a hand before his eyes, trying to pull him back down to earth. Once he looked up she forced herself to continue unhindered by the preoccupied glaze that now constantly fogged over Sean’s eyes. “I’m gonna take Ally to go shopping for school clothes.” At the mention of her name Ally appeared in the doorway next to her mother’s side with a brilliant disarming smile on her face.
“Alright,” he said with a forced smile standing from the bed to place a kiss on her cheek simply for the sake of propriety and Ally. Sean’s stomach clenched at the now mundane act; he couldn’t stand it. He wrote and treasured love and passion above all things, yet his own life was now devoid of both. The only reason he stayed in this excuse of an existence was Ally. She was his only source of joy.
No old fire bubbled below his breastbone and flowed to his lips, compelling him to kiss his wife. His lips were cold against her skin as she tried to enjoy the caress. There was neither love nor any emotion, for that matter, behind the touch. She knew he was simply going through the motions these days. “Remember to make her get something pink and frilly,” he jested, kneeling down to pull Ally into a bear hug and tickling her sides.
“Daddy, stop!” The young girl burst into a fit of giggles as she nestled against her father’s neck, pretending to squirm in shock and pulled at his pajama top in an attempt to get away.
Christine was sure of one thing; Sean would never let anything come between him and his daughter, but between himself and his wife, she wasn’t so sure.
+++++++++++++++
With a quick nod of his head he lowered his dark tinted sunglasses, slipping from being tangled in his disheveled auburn hair to rest gently on the straight bridge of his nose. Elijah stared at the large glass paneled front door of what his agent had told him was Mr. Astin’s house. Tilting his head back he looked to the right and found a small lit up button embedded in the crumbling brick flanking the front door. He pressed the doorbell and heard an echoing ‘ding’ within the house. Tapping his foot impatiently Elijah waited for a few moments before hearing a voice call from inside the house.
“One sec!” The voice sounded rushed but there was an excited undercurrent that sparked up the hair on the back of Elijah’s neck. Nervously he pulled at the cheap tinted plastic veiling his notorious eyes and began tapping the heel of his hand with them. Within a minute Elijah could see through the glass as the older man walking towards the door.
‘Black and white biography photos don’t do him justice…’ The man was buttoning up an open white-collared shirt from the bottom up, hastily covering his sun tanned-skin. The tip of a pink tongue was pressed against his upper lip in concentration. Elijah’s mouth went dry. Pulling his focus from the hollow of the man’s throat that was lightly covered by golden hairs, Elijah looked up as the door opened with a slight creak.
‘Oh god, those eyes!’ His mind began to spin out of control. Sean felt as if something had suddenly kicked him in the stomach. All the air rushed out silently from between his parted lips. He’d seen those many times before. The loss of air was quickly replaced by a familiar fire that had burned within him every night, only this time stronger and far more real. He gripped the door frame with white knuckles as the other still clutched the third to last button of his shirt. In an attempt to speak, Sean opened his mouth but only found a breathy voice as he began to drown in familiar alluring cerulean.
“Hi,” he said dumbly, no barrier in his voice to mask his blatant adoration. Thankfully as soon as he heard his own voice he came to his senses and quickly asked the young actor in. “Would you like to come in for some coffee, Mr. Wood?”
“Elijah, please, just call me Elijah.” He felt his lips pull at the corners as a smile graced his face, lighting up his eyes. Within his own body he felt something stir as he found himself face to face with a man he had held in such high regards. In one look Elijah knew he had probably made a fatal mistake in meeting Sean in person. He had already fallen for this man’s mind and talent to twist words, but now he realized there was a deadly combination of mind and body and it was quickly taking control of his heart. In the back of his mind a quiet voice warned him Sean was already another’s, but since when did mind have any sway over the matters of Elijah’s heart?
“Elijah…” Elijah had never heard his name spoken with such reverence as Sean’s voice had just then. The younger man nodded with another smile of encouragement. Sean turned back into his house, leading Elijah into the living room as he finished buttoning his shirt. “You can sit there if you want Elijah,” he said motioning to the old gray leather couch that had been a wedding present from his mother. “I’ll just go get the coffee.” Sean left to fetch two steaming mugs of coffee as Elijah sat alone, feeling every last nerve on end. His hands found a hole in the knee of his jeans and began to pull at the stringy fabric stretching across the hole. He really needed a cigarette.
“Well, I wanted to talk to you about your book, Mr. Astin.” Not knowing what else to say, Elijah decided to just get to the reason as to why he was there.
“Sean,” was his first reply before the rest of the sentence registered in his mind. This young man wanted to talk about his book. Sean froze as he walked back to living room; no one had ever given him, or his book, the time of day to discus it. Not even Christine had talked to him about the message he had woven so carefully into the book, through every word and sentence he had tried to tell the reader one thing. Taken aback the only words he could form after his own name was a weak, “Really?”
“Yeah. Sean,” Elijah said hesitantly but was surprised at the ease of which the name slipped from his tongue. “The Inevitable is such a beautiful book. I mean the message underneath all of it is so powerful, if not a little daunting,” he said with a wry grin, sipping from the offered mug. “There really isn’t anything you can do to escape your fate is there? It’s all really preordained, that’s the message right?” Elijah asked, pretty sure of himself but still wanting to know how Sean had intended the subtext to read.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-three.” Elijah replied, cocking a confused eyebrow. Sean couldn’t stop his lips from falling open, ‘Ten year age difference between us, and this guy has figured out what my publisher couldn’t.’
The first moment Sean had seen Elijah standing before him his doorway, he’d felt a warmth in the pit of his stomach; purely caused by the young man’s eyes and his commanding beauty. Even dressed in a simple blue pin-stripped button up shirt and faded jeans Elijah’s simple splendor through, in Sean’s eyes. But as he sat and listened to Elijah discus with such complete understanding every subtle nuance within the book, mouth slightly agape; he felt the heat spread up to rest just below his breastbone. How many countless times had he written such feelings into his stories, always cringing at the clichéd fake feeling surrounding them?
Elijah felt so comfortable just sitting there talking to Sean; not feeling too young or too immature. He never felt as though Sean was talking down to him as so many of his past directors or writers did. Letting his every thought flow from his body he tried to further understand what Sean was trying to say through his written words. Sean was sitting on the edge of his seat, as was Elijah, encouraging the younger man when he was on the right path to understanding something he hadn’t seen before in the subtext. Elijah could feel his pulse just below his skin beating wildly from the combination of sudden understanding and the gentle gaze of Sean’s mossy eyes as they shifted with his every emotion.
Well that is to say he spoke of his every thought save one he wasn’t sure he should mention; the relationship between William and Patrick. He didn’t want to make Sean uncomfortable; he would simply wait till Sean mentioned it, if he ever would. As soon as he felt “their” chapter’s name on the tip of his tongue he quickly spun the subject in a new direction.
“And oh when I heard you wanted to turn the book into a movie my heart just about burst!” Elijah admitted with a slight blush. Sean bit his lower lip as he cradled the now half empty mug of coffee as he leaned forward. “I mean I’ve always wanted to be in a movie that originally was a book. It’s been a dream of mine since before I can remember.” Elijah’s voice wavered with nostalgia as Sean felt another surge of warmth.
‘This man is far too perfect to be real.’ Sean’s mind screamed as he confided in Elijah his similar dream. “Well I guess that’s more common ground for us Lijah.” Sean didn’t even notice the slip into terms of more familiarity. “I’ve always wanted to direct a movie that was once one of my printed stories.” The room seemed to be charged with a sudden current of euphoria as the two smiled. ‘Perhaps dreams when combined can come true.’
“That reminds me, Sean.” Elijah said regaining some of his composure he had lost when discussing Sean’s book with enthusiasm. He placed his empty cup on the glass coffee table as he sat back fully onto the seat of the couch. “I wanted to also ask you about your screenplay, if you’ve found a producer and what not.”
“Well actually I’m somewhat at a deadlock on one scene. I’m not sure it should really be left in the original screenplay.” Sean confessed placing his mug next to Elijah’s and tracing the rim with his index finger, slicked by coffee. “But I think I’ve just decided what to do with it.” Without looking up Sean smiled as he continued to circle the ceramic rim. Guessing as to what scene Sean spoke of so obscurely Elijah blushed hoping it was that of Will and Patrick’s and that maybe his visit has swayed Sean into keeping it. Noticing Sean’s avoiding his gaze Elijah decided he should let the older man finish his screenplay. The sooner it was done the more time he’d hopefully get to spend with Sean.
“I should probably be going. It was nice meeting you, Sean.” Elijah excused himself but found Sean escorting him to the front door.
“Like wise, Elijah.” He held out his hand but quickly dropped it pulling Elijah into a warm embrace. He’d never in his life felt such a strong connection in such a short time. The need to protect, care and love this young man with such an incredible mind and old soul was controlling his body as he wrapped his arms around his smaller frame. A spark of encouragement warmed Sean’s back as Elijah’s arms wreathed around his frame. Elijah’s breath was warm against his ear as he whispered in a voice much huskier than he had intended.
“If you’d let me, I’d love to be your William.”

Date: 2004-03-07 03:17 pm (UTC)okay moving on.
I read this bit “Well it seems Mr. Astin is open for the rest of the day. He said that you could stop by anytime.” and I squeed like a seven year old with candy. The sense that u get that u know he's going to meet him now and I got very excited. Nice play on tension.
I also love the fact that Elijah understands Sean so completely before they've even met so when they do meet it's like spark spark spark. It's beautiful.
And oh my god by the time I got to the end I just had the most dorkiest grin on my face. This was pure perfection and altho it's AU you've still got their characteristics down to perfection and wow I just love it.
And I've ranted quite a bit now. I'm sorry if this makes no sense.

Date: 2004-03-07 09:40 pm (UTC)I liked how you wrapped up Dom and Lij. Made them friends again. And I like that you had Dom be in love with Billy (it's just right somehow, you know? hehe). And I liked how the passage from Sean's book ran through Elijah's mind when Dom told him.
Oh Ally's so sweet and cute. Love her. And I feel bad for Sean, with how things are with Christine. :( I do have to say I'm a bit confused. Are there the two girls? Cuz I've seen the word children a few times, but the only one that's been mentioned is Ally (so far, at least)???
I loved Elijah's reaction to seeing Sean. Just how he studied him and was impressed with his looks... o_0
I really loved this line: The loss of air was quickly replaced by a familiar fire that had burned within him every night, only this time stronger and far more real.
Sean buttoning his shirt was a nice effect.
Last line was perfect.
Oh this was soo good and I can't wait for more. Thanks!

Date: 2004-03-08 03:31 pm (UTC)Ooops I guess I must have slipped cause in this AU he only has Ally *blush*, sorry if I confused you.
*now can't stop grinning from all the sweet praise* I'm glad you liked Elijah's reaction, I was a lil nervous about this chapter and I'm glad I've seemed to some how pull it off. I'm really glad you liked the last line cause it was my favorite part by far of this chapter.
